one lovely blog award

My friend Alice Phillips, of Ally’s Kitchen, surprised me by giving me this award a few weeks ago. What an honor!  This award comes with a few questions for the recipients to answer, and I’ve been looking at them, thinking about my answers since I received the award. Along with sharing a little bit about myself, I am to pass this award on to five other bloggers.

Describe yourself in 7 words~~

creative, outgoing, adventurous, loyal, generous, funny and loving

What keeps you up at night? ~~

Not being able to turn off my brain. I’m going in so many directions right now, between writing, cooking, photographing, painting, parenting, being a wife, being a friend and taking care of a house, there’s a lot to think about. Over the years I’ve gotten pretty good at figuring out how to make time for everything, but sometimes I stay up late just trying to get a little “me” time and go to bed thinking about everything I have to do the next day. It would be nice if there was an “off” switch. 🙂

Who would you like to be? ~~

Me. I like myself, and I’ve lived long enough to know that no matter how rosy someone else’s life may look on the outside, that everyone has their own set of problems. I like this saying: “If everyone threw all their problems and troubles in a pile, I bet you’d gladly take yours back.” And you never really know what challenges someone else may be facing. That’s not to say that I don’t admire others. I do. There are many qualities in others that I would like to emulate. Patience being one of them.

What scares you? ~~

This question is the one that kept me from answering these for so long. But, here it is, my honest answer. The thing that scares me the most is failing at being a balanced parent. My relationship with my parents is dysfunctional, and I want better for my children.

What are the best and worst things about blogging? ~~

I think the best thing about blogging, for me, is the ability to create something every day and see it completed. I’m working on two long term goals (books) that take years to create. It’s nice to have blogging as a creative outlet. Almost instant gratification.

The worst thing about blogging? I like what Ally Said… “It can be addictive…I want to cook more and more…photograph more and more…enter food contests more and more…it consumes your waking hours and time…like an addict, you say, ‘just one more post…blog…picture…’  Plus it’s not good for your neck, back, etc. sitting long hours at a computer!” All true! 🙂

The last website I looked at ~~ A Beautiful Mess

If I could change one thing about myself ~~ I’d be in better shape….I am working on that! 🙂

Slankets, yes or no?~~ I had to look this up! Hee hee… Um that would be a hell no.

Tell us something about the person who tagged you ~~

Alice Phillips is a gorgeous lady and an amazingly talented chef. An all around lovely person to know. She’s generous and funny and every time I talk to her I feel better about myself. She’s an encourager which I think is a great quality. She loves her family, does yoga, and I want to be more like her. I’m fortunate to call her my friend.

Thanks again for the award, Alice!

The five blogs I passed this award to:

The Papercup Kitchen

Becky in the Root Cellar

Carrie’s Experimental Kitchen

The Keeley McGuire Blog

XOXO,

~Melissa

  1. OH, Melissa! I feel like I know you even better now…reading your responses (twice to make sure I digested well) I could identify w/so many of the issues that you face as a young mom w/all the plates your are spinning and trying to balance. The one thing that I would strong advise you to do, and make it a priority, is to take care of yourself! I know this may sound like an oxymoron, (like how in the devil do I have time for that!!), but in the overall scheme of life, living and connection, unless you are good to you, your impact, focus and influence on others will not be what it can be…so, work that workout, excercising and body work into your life…you won’t regret it…now I’ve rambled on and shall stop, but one more thing (lol!)…I am deeply touched by what you have said about our friendship…yes, it brings tears to my eyes, and never worry, my sweet, you are one beautiful mother who’s bringing huge joy, love and legacy to your children’s lives…xoxxo Ally <<>>>

    1. That is really good advice. 🙂 I do take time for myself, but haven’t made enough of an effort to get in those good, long workouts like I should. Jeff and I are joining a health club this week. I am so glad, and sooo looking forward to losing a few pounds and fitting into my “skinny” jeans again. All of that good cooking has made me a bit smooshy. hee hee.

      Love you lady! xoxo

  2. Thank you again for passing on this wonderful award to me Melissa! I loved reading your responses and we all face similar challenges trying to create the perfect life-work balance and it’s definitely not an easy task. I too had a dysfunctional relationship with my family growing up but I am a stronger person because of it and determined not to repeat those behaviors with my own family. Even though I try, as I’m sure you do too, we’re not Supermom’s no matter how hard we try.
Here was my post with my responses as well in case you missed it. xoxo <3
